How to Test Whether AI Recommends Your Brand (and What to Do If It Doesn’t)
You can check your AI visibility in about twenty minutes with three tools and ten questions. Here’s the exact process - and the four fixes that move you from invisible to recommended. No special software required.
If buyers now build their shortlists by asking an AI, then there’s a new, uncomfortable question every leader should be able to answer: when someone asks ChatGPT for a company like mine, does my name come up?
Most people have never checked. Here’s how to find out today - no consultant, no software, about twenty minutes.
The 20-minute AI visibility test
Step 1: Pick your three tools. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overview (just search a question in Google and read the AI summary). These are where your buyers are increasingly starting.
Step 2: Write your ten buyer questions. Think like your customer, not like your marketing team. Examples for a Tampa firm: - “Best [your category] company in Tampa for a $15M business?” - “Who should a [your vertical] company hire to [outcome]?” - “Top [category] providers in Florida?” - “How do I choose a [category] partner?” (and see who gets named as an example)
Step 3: Ask all ten, in all three tools. Don’t lead the witness - ask the way a real buyer would. Copy the answers into a doc.
Step 4: Score yourself honestly. For each answer, mark: Were you named? Were you named first, or buried? Was what the AI said about you accurate and flattering? Who got named instead?
That scorecard is the truth about your AI visibility. It’s often humbling - and it’s the single most useful marketing diagnostic you can run right now.
What the results tell you
If you’re not named at all: the AI can’t find enough clear, structured, credible evidence about you to feel safe recommending you. You’re invisible at the exact moment buyers decide.
If you’re named but the description is wrong or generic: you have presence without clarity. The AI knows you exist but can’t tell what you’re best at - which means it won’t confidently recommend you over a sharper competitor.
If a competitor is consistently named first: they’ve done the work to become the category’s default answer, and early leads compound. Every month you wait, they get harder to unseat.
The four fixes that get you named
Once you know where you stand, the moves are concrete:
1. Publish question-shaped answers. Take your ten buyer questions and write one clear page for each - the question as the headline, the answer stated plainly right underneath. This is the single highest-leverage thing you can do, because it gives the AI exactly what it’s looking for.
2. Make your positioning consistent everywhere. Your website, your LinkedIn, your directory listings, your press - same category, same claims, same language. Contradiction makes AI hedge; consistency makes it confident.
3. Earn third-party mentions. AI trusts what others say about you. A podcast appearance, a partner’s blog, a local business feature, real reviews. Aim for a steady trickle, not a one-time push.
4. Attach a named expert. Put a real person - founder or senior lead - on your expertise, with a bylined bio and a track record. AI (and humans) trust a named human over an anonymous “our team.”
Why do this now
This is a rare window. AI-search visibility is still uncontested in most categories and most cities, because most companies haven’t realized the front door moved. The ones who structure themselves to be found this year tend to become the durable default answer - the name the AI keeps repeating - while everyone else is still optimizing for a version of search that’s fading.
Run the test. It costs twenty minutes and tells you whether you’re in the game.
